Finding your Organization’s Leadership Brand
Leadership does not follow a one-size-fits-all mandate: every leader has a leadership style that is specific to them. Just like each individual leader, organizations have a leadership style that is unique to their culture and subsequently compliments their values and goals. By finding your company’s leadership brand, you will be able to hire more effectively while achieving success across your organization.
Straying from One-Size-Fits-All Leadership
If you find yourself using stereotypical leadership traits to define your organization’s leadership brand, chances are you need to do some deeper thinking. For example, many leaders are eager to advance in their organization. On the other hand, you should be looking for traits that truly reflect your culture. A great example of this is MIT’s study on their leadership style found here. In their assessment of their leadership brand, MIT discovered unique and honest traits such as “passion for hard, edgy problems” and “distaste for office politics”1.
An effective method to diagnose these traits within your organization is through your history of who gets fired or voluntarily terminated. By analyzing this set of data, you will be able to find areas in which employees are incompatible with your organization on a cultural level, and as a result, you are also able to discover the areas in which employees are more compatible. On a more personal level, it is important for business leaders to be introspective so that they know if they are compatible with their organization of choice: leadership compatibility and brand is a two-way street.
